Six Ethiopian universities have been ranked among the 2,000 "top-ranked" universities in the world.

The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), an institution that produces an annual ranking of universities, has released its 2024 rankings of universities.


Of the 20,966 universities ranked, only 2,000 universities, or 9.5 percent, are ranked "top."


According to the institution's 2024 ranking:


1. Addis Ababa University ➭ 841st

2. University of Gondar ➭ 1701st

3. Mecklenburg University ➭ 1748th

4. Jimma University ➭ 1767th

5. Bahir Dar University ➭ 1886th

6. Haramaya University ➭ 1982


Of the top ten universities in this year's ranking, eight are United States universities.


For the past 12 years, the institute evaluates the quality of education offered by universities, the quality of research and the level of faculty.


The institute, known for advising governments and universities to improve their educational and research outcomes, classifies universities internationally in terms of principles of purpose, transparency, and sustainability.
